MABS Security Warning

On 13th July 2009 responsibility for the provision of the MABS service was transferred from the Department of Social and Family Affairs to the Citizens Information Board.

The Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) provides assistance to people who are over-indebted and need help and advice in coping with debt problems. The 1992 Budget provided for a special allocation of €330,000 (£260,000) for the establishment of five MABS pilot projects around the country. These projects were officially launched on 22 September 1992. Since then the number of MABS delivering money advice has grown to 52 and a national company MABS National Development Limited was established in 2004 to support and develop the Money Advice and Budgeting Service. The service centrally involves the local credit union and;

  • Provides assistance in working out a budget suited to the individual or family
  • Deals with creditors on behalf of the individual
  • Gives advice and support to individuals or families who have financial difficulties
  • Helps with the setting up of special accounts with the Credit Union,


  • Provides ongoing support to people who successfully overcome their financial difficulties.

The MABS National Telephone Helpline 0761 07 2000 was launched nationwide in October 2007. It operates Monday to Friday from 9am to 8pm.
