Print page
  • The Department is aware that a former employee has recently been found guilty of offences relating to the sale of customers' personal data. The Department very much regrets the understandable concern this may cause its customers.
  • The breach of data was uncovered in late 2010, and the Department is aware of 48 cases where customer information was passed on to an unauthorised third party.
  • The Department notified the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) as soon as it became aware of the data breach. Since then, the Department has assisted An Garda Siochána and the ODPC in their investigations.
  • Following the recent conclusion of a legal action, the Department will be writing to those customer affected by the data breach to explain the nature of the data breach in accordance with our Data Protection Policy and in line with guidance from the ODPC.
  • The Department would like to assure all customers that it has strict data protection and information security policies, standards, procedures and guidelines in place governing the use of its computer systems and customer data.  The Department ensures oversight in relation to data protection by keeping records of data accesses which are then subject to audit.
